Let Us Start At The Beginning

I suppose a few words of explanation may be helpful here.  Historic European Martial Arts, Exercise and Eating well seem unrelated at first but I assure you there is a method to my madness. Kind of.
A few years ago I discovered a diet referred to as Paleo or the Caveman Diet.  At this point in my life I had struggled with my weight and apart from some hiking most of my physical activity comprised of my thumbs moving the sticks on my gaming controller.  Part of the issue was that I like food. I like food a lot. Because of this like I started cooking at a young age and as a result am an accomplished cook. I began to make really good food so I also began eating more of it. As you can see this seems  a downward spiral, but I digress, back to Paleo.
This diet eliminated all grains, legumes and dairy. I have since reintroduced dairy into my diet because I am of the fortunate metabolic type from northern Europe that can productively digest it. The main calorie source of this diet is fat. Healthy fats, according to this diet, consist of avocado, olive and coconut oils in addition to the fats from animals.  I concluded that my skill in the kitchen combined with this new eating philosophy could prove beneficial to my waistline and it did. I basically decided to use my powers for good rather than evil and make healthy foods tasty.
My BMI dropped, my muscle increased and I just plain felt GOOD. I had more energy so I began to look for more things to do and one morning simply I woke up and decided that I wanted to learn how to sword fight. After a little research I picked up Tobler’s German Longsword and the rest was history.
I had a goal; to become a better swordsman. Training progressed into exercise and everything seemed to click together.  They say that fitness is 70% in the kitchen 30% in the gym and it seems to rings true. Eating right gave rise to exercise which in turn gave rise to interest in HEMA which makes me want to exercise and , therefore, eat right.
I plan to share my experiences here in hopes that it will aid others. So let’s get started.  Fight with strength and honor.
